In 2019, Nui & husband, French Chef Francis Pascal opened an outstanding, elevated Thai-French fusion restaurant that elegantly presents the comforting and familiar flavors we cherish in both cuisines. Pairing wine with their menu is an exciting exploration of unique flavors. Our Traminette '19, a well balanced off-dry style bursting with floral notes, lychee & pear lends itself beautifully to Nui Nui's savory and spicy dishes with their occasional touches of sweetness. We love the Evil Jungle Princess, a boldy spiced dish with sauteed veggies and red curry basil sauce. Another great pairing with Traminette is the Pineapple Fried Rice with veggies, raisins, cashews, fresh pineapple & egg. Nui Nui Kitchen is open daily for pickup and delivery. “Myself and a few friends finally became members about a year or 2 ago and we are so happy we did. There is a core group of ladies that love to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, just sitting outside wtih a picnic, sipping on Penns Woods wines and listening to live music.” Valerie has been coming to the winery since the early 2000s. She says it is a “luxury” to be only 5 minutes away from one of her favorite spots! Valerie has recruited most of her friends and family to join her for events at the winery and many have become members themselves! Valerie is always on the move, her outogoing nature makes her a fixture at nearly every exciting event from pairings to wine education classes- even during the harvest you'll see her out in the vineyard with clippers in hand! Her favorite event to enjoy with friends is our biannual Run the Vineyards. She has participated in the 5K for the past 5 years at the winery on Mother’s Day weekend and has won 1st place in her age group 3 times! In addition to the Mother’s Day run, Valerie enjoys staying active by taking our “Yoga in the Vineyard” classes whenever she can. Her favorite part about the classes is how relaxing the scenery is and that she gets to reward herself afterwards with wine, of course! Valerie also enjoys learning through our Wine Education Series with her best friend, Patty. Valerie says “I can’t wait for them to start up again- we love drinking Penns Woods wines and learning all about it!”. If you thought Valerie wasn’t active enough, she also has a passion for horseback riding and would love to plan a ride and taste around the vineyard. (hint, hint management team) “The staff at the winery could not be nicer and more welcoming- I feel like family when I am there. Everyone seems so happy to work there and they enjoy making people happy! I look forward to just hanging out when the winery re-opens... I feel like I really “get away” when I’m there. I am able to decompress that I sometimes forget I am not actually on vacation somewhere! It is such an inviting, laid-back atmosphere that keeps us coming back and recruiting new friends to join us! In the meantime, you can find me sipping on my favorite, Sauvignon Blanc, to get me through quarantine until I have my favorite spot back!”
We are so fortunate to have met Valerie and to have her a part of our Penns Woods family. Valerie lights up the room with her smile and infectious positive energy. She may love attending our events, but we are the ones who love having her at each and every one of them! She inspires us to do more and create more and we look forward to being able to have her and all of her friends back enjoying the Vineyard to its full capacity. Until then, we salute a life lived where the glass is always half full (of Sauvignon Blanc, of course!). This week’s staff spotlight highlights our wonderful Tasting Room Associate, Amanda! Amanda recently joined our team this past February and she has been a bright light in our lives ever since. Before becoming part of the Penns Woods family, Amanda worked at a winery in Mexico called Finca Sala Vivé by Freixenet México for 14 years. She moved to the US in November 2014 and became an American Citizen in August 2019! Amanda tells us often that she is proud to be an American citizen and we all feel lucky that she it too! Here is a little Q&A to get to know more about Amanda from her life before Penns Woods and currently with our team. Q: What were some of your favorite parts about your job at the winery in Mexico? A: I loved leading the wine tour group to the winery facilities, describing the wine process of Methode Champenoise (which is a method of making sparkling wine by allowing the last stage of fermentation to take place in the bottle; the specialty of her winery). I enjoyed coordinating four major events each year at the winery; the Paella Festival, Harvest Festival, Local Vendor Fair and VIP "Dinner Inside the Caves". I also loved helping to export wines to Japan and Germany, as well as developing private wine labels for retailers in which I was a part of executing design label strategy and providing the customer service of multiple domestic wine brands. Finally, the best part about my job...tasting wine every day, of course! Q: What do you miss most about Mexico? A: I miss the food, my family, my friends, former coworkers and the weather. Although, now I have a new family and amazing coworkers in Penns Woods Winery. I enjoy the freedom in America, the amazing wines, nature, the birds, the people, the history, and the culture. I enjoy listening to the National Anthem and the pride with which people defend America.
Q: What hobbies have you enjoyed during quarantine? A: I am working out every day at home with a virtual gym, reading the book “Wine Trails United States & Canada” (BTW Penns Woods is in pg.# 208), and social distancing at Waterloo Mills Preserve. I love nature, watching birds, walking, and taking outdoor pictures. When I was working at the winery in Mexico, after having lunch, I used to walk for a bit every day in the vineyard with my best friend. I loved walking through the vineyard and looking at the birds flying around (as I still do). We used to watch a red bird that we call in Mexico “Petit Rojo” which means “Small Red”. At the vineyards of Mexico Queretaro Region, it is very common to see that bird flying over the vineyards, so every time when I see a red bird in the vineyards, it reminds me of those days walking with my best friend. In fact, recently all the wineries from Mexico Queretaro Region made a project of sparkling wine that will represent them, named “Q Wine”, but the funny part is, they included on the label design the red bird! Q: What is one positive message you want to share with our beloved customers? A: This is a reflection time to appreciate the things that are around us, like nature, the sun, and our freedom. Also, spending time with our loved ones has aided in the ability to have deeper conversations that we normally do not have the time to discuss in our normal routines. We are going to overcome this together!! Meet Lauren & Andy Rim! Lauren is a teacher, avid reader, and just loves to dance while Andy likes to spend his time playing guitar and writing music. The Rims also have a passion for travel and can't wait to get out and explore once these crazy times are over. One of their favorite adventures together was island hopping last June in the southern carribean! But if you ask them, there's really nothing better than relaxing at the winery with friends and family listening to the lives tunes. “We love the atmosphere at Penns Woods and it's a great go-to anytime there's nice weather.” Aside from the usually winery weekend hangs, their other favorite events include our annual vertical tastings as well as our monthly wine education series, especially the blending class!
As you might have noticed, they love it so much here, most of the photos above are from their engagement shoot in the vineyard and around our property! Lauren and Andy are a super fun and outgoing part of our Wine Club and it's been great to see the community of friends they have within our Club too, hanging out with Matt & Linsey Anderson, Nitasha & Ryan Smith and Julia & Dan Shay! In fact they have together taken their passion for wine on the road, recently popping down to Virginia for a wine tasting tour of the Monticello Wine Trail! Lauren's favorite wine from Penns Woods is the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, specifically, the 2009 vintage. For Andy, he also enjoys more full-bodied reds. He is into good Chiantis and Meritage blends, but his go-to at Penns Woods is the Cabernet Franc Reserve 2016! Since current circumstances have kept them from being able to enjoy wine socially, they have started to appreciate pairing wines with the meals they make at home. In fact, these two big, bold red lovers have cultivated a new found appreciation for white wines through their cooking and pairing with various dishes! Although still, our Proprietor Reserve 2014 has been a popular choice for them recently (we've seen the evidence on our Wine Club Facebook group!). We are so grateful to have members such as the Rims. They not only are one of our early supporters, but they are always actively engaged with the various special events we put together at the winery and their passion for knowledge is why we do what we do in the first place. We love seeing them together and cannot wait to have them back enjoying our live music out on our lawn. Cheers to this incredible couple! Think Globally, Drink Locally! For nearly 20 years, Abruzzo native Gino Razzi has sought to produce premium wines that express the unique terroir of Pennsylvania. They do everything so well and seamlessly that it’s easy to forget the work that goes into making this the premier wine club anywhere. Since our new reality has begun (during quarantine), Penns Woods has been the best out of all the clubs I belong to in staying connected to its members and the general wine consumers. This is the fourth week of a virtual wine experience for Penns Woods and some of the larger wine clubs that I belong to are just now starting the virtual experience. I want to thank the staff and management of Penns Woods for being innovative and keeping us connected to the winery. I know it’s not always easy, but it is very much appreciated."-John Green (our 1st Wine Club Member) Tommy has been with our Penns Woods team since January 4th, 2019. For those of you who have seen Tommy in the Tasting Room, you know how passionate he is about the winery, the Penns Woods staff, and his favorite wine, Novi. Check out our Q&A with him below!
Q: Tommy, what hobbies have you picked up while having more time for yourself during quarantine? A: I've always loved the outdoors. More than ever I have enjoyed running, biking and exploring the trails in my area. I have also been watching a lot of LIVE Instagram tastings from various wineries, of course, Penns Woods being on my weekly watch. Q: What is your wine of choice these days? And what is your all-time favorite Penns Woods Wine? A: My favorite wine from Penns Woods is, and will always be, the Novi. The Novi's juicy fruit forward characteristics are so enjoyable to the palette that I cannot seem to put the bottle down. Although I will always enjoy a glass of Novi, I am currently loving our new vintage of Sauvignon Blanc. I have never been into white wine, but the Sauvignon Blanc pairs perfect with the sunny, spring days we have had during this quarantine. I love sitting outside on my lawn, listening to some tunes, and sipping on the Sauvignon Blanc 2019. Q: What is one of your favorite beers from our partnered breweries? A: I love all IPAs, but the Unicorn Tarts from Stolen Sun was by far my favorite that I have tried from our partnered breweries. We had it on tap at the Barn Bar this past summer, and I loved raving about it to our customers. We are so lucky to have so many incredible local breweries that we partner with. I look forward to when we have Barn Bar back open for so many reasons, but specifically, I look forward to trying the new beers on tap each week! Q: What is your favorite way to enjoy wine? With friends, a specific time of year, with food, etc.? A: After a long week of teaching, there is nothing better than going over to a friends house to pop open a fresh bottle of wine and relax. During this quarantine, I have obviously not had the luxury of being together with friends, but I have participated in many virtual happy hours to make up for it. I also look forward to our Friday virtual Happy Hours with Penns Woods either on WebEx or Instagram/Facebook Live! Being able to be social while social distancing has kept me feeling hopeful during this difficult time. Q: What is one positive message you want to share with our beloved customers? A: Although COVID-19 has confined us to our homes, we are starting to really appreciate the little things such as talking with our neighbors more, or spending time at parks admiring nature. In addition, with us staying inside, we are cleaning up the earth a bit more from pollution going down from us all driving a little bit less. Although this has been a major set back, once this is all over, I know we will all look forward to being social again. I know personally, I will never take for granted the simple things such as shaking someones hand, being in a store without masks, and hugging our loved ones. I look forward to brighter days ahead with my friends, family, staff, and our incredible customers at Penns Woods!! ![]() La Cabra Brewing & Bodega by La Cabra Berwyn - Bryn Mawr La Cabra Brewing's original location in Berwyn serves up Latin-inspired gastropub fare that keeps your taste buds dancing with delight! Kathy & Kent have been loyal customers, members, and friends of our Penns Woods team ever since they stepped foot inside our tasting room. Check out Kathy's story of the vineyard below! ![]() "By chance my husband and I along with my cousin and his wife happened upon Penns Woods Winery while traveling to Winterthur on July 19, 2014. Stopped in for a glass and of course it didn't stop there. It became my “Happy Place”. I can't say enough about the staff and how warm and inviting they make one feel so it's easy to keep going back. I started enjoying wine while in the state of Washington in 2010 and always chose a Riesling. I still enjoy a good Riesling once in a while but when I did a tasting at Penns Woods of the reds, I was sold. There is not any one varietal I prefer but I enjoy the Proprietors Reserve 2014, the Chambourcin and Dui Amici. I learned the longer the wine “sleeps” the better it becomes. I would not however pass up the Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon. Being outdoors on the patio when the weather cooperates and having wine (Penns Woods) and cheese with music in the background during the evening hours is a favorite for my husband and myself. A summer day at the vineyard watching the grapes grow is another way to relax and a great stress relief from everyday nuances and we visit often. Events at the Winery are always fun and I try to attend as many as possible. The member happy hours are great date nights and the pairings are always a hit but my all-time favorite is the Harvest Dinner in late August. My husband and I have attended all three and the event gets better every year. So looking forward to it again this year so let me be the first to register! Floral arranging and gardening is a hobby I have enjoyed for many years but now I garden with pots and I enjoy a good mystery/crime novel on cold rainy days accompanied by a glass of wine. Entertaining friends at various times of the year and trying different recipes paired with Penns Woods wine is another activity I enjoy. Nothing makes me happier than to have guests to our home for good food and drink. Some have come to the winery with my husband and I to experience the ambiance and enjoy some wonderful wine. Since my family all live outside PA when they do visit a trip to the winery is always on the agenda. My 2 sons have enjoyed my Happy Place and my youngest ran the Mother’s Day 5k last May in the pouring rain. My sister from MA has enjoyed a glass or two on the deck and my nephew from MD bought a case because he thought the wines were that good. If you see me at the winery come over and say hello! Would enjoy sharing a glass or two." -Kathy Lerner ![]() We are thankful that wine (and cider and beer) brought us all together back in 2014. We value the bond we have created with so many of our members, especially the Lerners. You definitely do not want to pass up an opportunity to join them for a glass of wine...it will turn into a cherished memory and a future friendship! We look forward to more great times and memories made with them. Cheers to Kathy and Kent! ![]() Meet Kathy! Kathy has been a part of the Penns Woods team since October 2015. If you have had the opportunity to have her as your server in the tasting room, you know what a ray of sunshine she is! During this quarantine, Kathy has been making the most of her time off by taking walks outside to surround herself with nature, watching her husband make bread and pasta from scratch (and then eating it of course!), and relaxing on her porch listening to all genres of music while enjoying the comradery of her neighbors doing the same. Kathy’s favorite wine from Penns Woods is the Chambourcin Reserve, but recently, she has been changing up her wine selection. When enjoying her husband’s homemade pasta, she prefers our Pinot Noir which in her opinión is “a match made in heaven”. While reading, our new vintage of Rose has been her go-to. Kathy has been looking on the bright side of this quarantine by appreciating the opportunity to catch up on some sleep, and ferociously tackling her Spring cleaning. But do not get her wrong, she is eager to get back to work and be around our Penns Woods family, including our amazing customers. Kathy wants to let everyone know that she hopes everybody stays healthy and safe and this all ends soon!
