We’ve got to admit: we host a lot of fun events at Penns Woods Winery, but one of our favorite ongoing events is our Sangria Weekends. Now through the end of September (but why wait?), come sip our Sunshine Sangria. If you think you know sangria, or have not enjoyed it elsewhere, we invite you to take a second look—and drink. We offer sangria as a fun, refreshing addition to our tastings and wine by the glass options and throw our own twist on it to create a delicious treat our customers crave during the sultry warmer months. Our late spring-summer Sunshine Sangria is made with Riesling soaked with strawberries and pineapples, giving it a peachy-island vibe. We’ve turned sangria upside down: ours is completely the opposite of traditional sangrias made with red wine and citrus flavors. It’s bright, refreshing and the perfect chiller on a hazy, hot and humid day. Or a rainy day. Well—any day! Check out Sangria Weekends at our Tasting Room Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Make a day of it: bring your own food and picnic outdoors on our comfy patio and beautiful bucolic grounds. On Saturdays and Sundays, you’ll be treated to live music, too. Our friendly Tasting Room staff awaits—see you soon!

Create the wow factor at your Memorial Day weekend BBQ by packing the cooler with wines—especially a few unexpected gems. Not hosting? Be the hero and tote along our favorites. With all due respect to beer (which we also enjoy), there’s something about a bracing sip of just-the-right wine with picnic food. Think a red-and-white checkered tablecloth or blanket and a stuffed picnic basket or blazing grill, and you can see how easy it is for wine to sneak in as the perfect fit. Whether it’s a casual affair or something more sophisticated (real wine glasses!), we invite you to rule Memorial Day with our five top pairings. 1. Start with a SaladA warm summer’s day begs for a cool salad. Bust out Asian inspiration with edamame, alfalfa shoots, baby kale, colorful peppers, red onions, fresh cilantro and a simple sesame-ginger dressing. Traminette pairs perfectly with a wide variety of foods, but especially something slightly spicy (due to its crisp, subtle acidity). 2. Get CheesyYes, you can drink red wine in the summer! Sip on a bold Merlot with its notes of ripe blackberry and chocolate tannins. It’s a great partner for almost every cheese, but turn heads with a fun platter of soft and hard cheeses like goat cheese, gorgonzola, smoked cheddar or whatever strikes you at your favorite cheesemonger. Pro tip: drizzle with honey, balsamic or chocolate for unforgettable tastes and offer an assortment of crackers. Not into red wine? Try our refreshingly sweet Bancroft Moscato with peachy-pineapple-honeysuckle flavors or a nutty-vanilla unoaked Chardonnay Reserve (or try all three!). 3. Enter the EntreesDoing the heavy lifting is Sauvignon Blanc, a versatile wine that’s complex yet completely approachable. Green fruit aromas give way to a hint of citrus and mineralogy at the finish. It’s the go-to for those who don’t like Chardonnay and is a worthy match for burgers, dogs, chicken, ribs, hoagies, shellfish and everything that’s finger-licking amazing at your BBQ. 4. Don't Forget DessertAs if. Who forgets dessert? We certainly don’t, and although we dig watermelon, ice cream cakes, fruit tarts and traditional summer fare, we love to amaze with gourmet mini cupcakes. They’re neat and sweet, and you can’t eat just one. Try White Merlot and see how this light yet dry rose with big aromatics and peach-pineapple-honeysuckle becomes the new crowd pleaser. It complements the cupcakes without stealing the show. 5. Just Sippin'Looking for a little additional refreshment at a sweltering summer picnic? Grab a glass of Bancroft Riesling. This well-rounded wine with a slightly sweet finish ain’t your gramma’s too-too-sweet wine—it boasts ripe pear, jasmine, honey, floral and citrus. (Treat gramma to a bottle!)

It’s from our fertile soil that great grapes—and great wine—spring forth. We do this by working in concert with the climate, pruning with the utmost care and harvesting by hand. We pride ourselves on being eco-friendly throughout our entire operation, too. This is important to our entire team, and we’re committed to growing that initiative not only to nurture the environment but also to give back to the community that supports us. And of course, we recommend drinking wine in moderation: too much of any good thing can be a bad thing. Still, we’re pleased as punch—make that pleased as sangria—that science is showing a bit of wine can go a long way in a sensible health and fitness routine. Red wine has been gaining popularity as the darling of the fitness-conscious for the last few years. A 2012 study at the University of Alberta peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Physiology showed high doses of the natural compound resveratrol improved physical performance, heart function and muscle strength in lab models. "I think resveratrol could help patient populations who want to exercise but are physically incapable. Resveratrol could mimic exercise for them or improve the benefits of the modest amount of exercise that they can do," said principal investigator Jason Dyck. Already exercise? We’ve got good news out of the Czech Republic that’s caught attention of exercisers around the world. Called In Vino Veritas (In Wine, Truth), this study introduced red and white wines to gauge the long-term effects on markers of atherosclerosis and oxidative stress. Men had two to two-and-a-half glasses, and women one to two. Researchers found red and white wine had similar effects, concluding, “The combination of moderate wine drinking plus regular exercises improves markers of atherosclerosis, suggesting this combination is protective against cardiovascular disease.” We'll drink to that! Wine is known to be relaxing, too, adding to a zen-state that is also a part of fitness. Taking time for yourself and becoming centered and reflective are important. Many use yoga practice to achieve this state, which combines full-body exercise with measured breathing and some meditation. It’s no coincidence we offer Yoga in the Vineyard to show off how a glass of wine can enhance your yoga-chill state. Even better: there’s science to support that, too! Science Daily reported that a Toronto General Hospital study looking at wine’s impact on relaxation confirmed that one drink of red wine slightly benefits the heart and blood vessels (relaxation!), “but the positive effects on specific biological markers disappear with two drinks.” All things in moderation, right? We’re here to help. Scope out our wines, stop by for yoga or visit our Tasting Room and reap the benefits of a wine-and-fitness lifestyle. Cheers!
